Firstly Chamonix is a town rather than a village and as such offers a lot to do besides skiing and snowboarding. As you arrive in the resort you just have to be impressed with the scenery – Mount Blanc towering above you. Chamonix is all go – lots of restaurants, hotels and visitors and a lively Saturday market. There are some beautiful old building in the centre an the cobbled streets and squares are car free so you can wander around at ease. There is some good shopping available stocking everything a winter sports person could require.
Chamonix is a wonderful full sized town that is open year round. In winter people from all over the world come to enjoy the Snow. Since the first winter Olympics back in 1924 Chamonix played an important role in the history of the skiing. Chamonix has some of the largest glaciers in Europe. Mont Blanc which rises up majestically is centred on three national borders, France, Switzerland and Italy. There is a project underway to have Mont Blanc listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Getting around the resort is easy with the free bus (use your C'arte D'Hote - Guest Card) which links the centre of town with all the ski resorts. The centre is pedestrianised and you will find Chamonix making a conscious effort to cut their CO2 emmissions. It's even free to travel on the train with your Guest Card between Servoz and Vallorcine. If you aren't given your free Guest Card at your place of accommodation on arrival go to the tourist office for details.

Le Hammeau Albert Premier, BP 55, 119, impasse du Montenvers, 74402 Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France T: +33 (4) 5053 0509 e: infos@hammeaualbert.fr If you're looking for somewhere that looks rustic on the outside, yet houses all the luxuries on the inside look no further than Le hammeau Albert Premier. This place gives you everything a 5* luxury hotel would without being snobby. It really is like its own little village with a health spa, restaurant, collection of out buildings that have been converted into accommodation. There's plenty of Le Corbusier furniture and the bathrooms are in tasteful granite. The perfect place to curl up in front of the fireplace after a hard days skiing.
La Chapelle d'Elisa - 394, chemin de la Rosiere, 74400 Argentiere, France T: +33 (4) 5054 0017, e: giacomot-helisa-ski@wanadoo.fr For something completely different why not try this converted chapel in nearby Argentiere. It only accommodates 2-3 persons at a time but it's lovely setting next to the forest and views of the surrounding mountains are superb. We recommend this place for experienced skiers who are prepared to hire a guide and explore the superb off piste. You can even ski fron the top of Les Grans Montets all the way down to the chapel. |
